Normal cycle. During each menstrual cycle, a woman’s ovaries release an egg. This process is called ovulation. The follicle develops into a corpus luteum, which can produce and release estrogen and progesterone for a specific period, i. To continue to produce these hormones, the corpus luteum needs to be triggered by another hormone called “human chorionic gonadotropin” HCG. This hormone is produced by the placenta from the time of embryo implantation.
Therefore, if the woman is not pregnant, the corpus luteum will stop producing the hormones days after ovulation, and menstruation will follow. This phenomenon is called “program cell death” or “apoptosis”. Consequently, ovulation can be calculated or estimated very easily by deducting 14 days from the time of menstruation.

Miscarriages are a lot more common than most people think, with one in six pregnancies ending before week October 15 is Pregnancy Loss Remembrance Day, raising awareness in the general community about the burden of miscarriage and help to reduce the stigma associated with it. Along with the emotional toll a miscarriage can take on couples, a major source of frustration is being left with a myriad of unanswered questions.
Whilst this adds to the frustration it can also mean you are more likely to achieve a healthy pregnancy in the future. Miscarriages can present in many ways, with some women experiencing a period like pain and bleeding. For others, there may be no symptoms and the miscarriage is picked up incidentally on a routine ultrasound. In some cases, an ultrasound can pick up features that the pregnancy may not be optimal and further testing or follow-up may be required by their fertility specialist.
To confirm a viable pregnancy an early dating scan is recommended. If this is confirmed, then the chance of a miscarriage occurring is greatly reduced. As miscarriages are common, it is not unexpected that other family members may have suffered one or more miscarriages. Some of which can run in the family, sometimes it may be co-incidental. The majority of miscarriages occur as a result of genetically abnormal embryos. Conditions that are also known to lead to recurrent miscarriage are blood clotting disorders; endocrine disorders; submucosal fibroids; and other structural abnormalities in the womb; as well as hormonal issues commonly seen with polycystic ovaries.
In a small percentage of people, a genetic abnormality can be passed down resulting in miscarriages.

Because the human egg is capable of fertilization for only 12 to 24 hours after ovulation the date of ovulation may be taken as being the date of conception. However, ultrasound determination of the date of ovulation has the same imprecision as does the ultrasound estimate of the gestational age and, therefore, a precise date of conception cannot usually be determined as with in vitro fertilization.
In addition, although a woman is most likely to become pregnant if she has sex on the day of ovulation conception may also occur from live sperm still in her reproductive tract on the day of ovulation if she had sex for up to five days before ovulation [26,27]. The due date may be estimated by adding days 9 months and 7 days to the first day of the last menstrual period LMP. This is the method used by “pregnancy wheels”.
The accuracy of the EDD derived by this method depends on accurate recall by the mother, assumes regular 28 day cycles, and that ovulation and conception occurs on day 14 of the cycle. Use of the LMP to establish the due date may overestimate the duration of the pregnancy, and can be subject to an error of more than 2 weeks . In cases where the date of conception is known precisely, such as with in vitro fertilization, the EDD is calculated by adding days to the date of conception.
Ultrasound uses the size of the fetus to determine the gestational age the time elapsed since the the first day of the last menstrual period. The accuracy of the ultrasound estimate of the gestational age varies according to the gestational age. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada recommends the earliest ultrasound with a crown rump length equivalent to at least 7 weeks or 10 mm should be used to determine the gestational age .

In the case of an IVF pregnancy, the start dates are planned and scheduled, so known in advance. This offers a more straightforward estimate of the due date. In this case, the start of the pregnancy adjusted by 2 weeks is from the day the eggs are harvested or the date of embryo or blastocyst transfer 3-day FET or 5-day FET.
Calculate delivery due date, cooncpetion date,, gestational age and other important pregnancy using LMP, ultrasound dating, or date of embryo transfer (IVF).
However, you can figure out your due date yourself, if you want. The average gestation for a singleton pregnancy is generally considered to be days or 40 weeks from your last menstrual period. However, due dates are more complicated and less certain than that. Also, due dates after infertility or after IVF can be a little different, too. Only 5 out of babies are born on their assigned due date. Studies have found that ovulation can occur a few days off from what a positive ovulation test or BBT chart indicates.
Also, implantation of the embryo also varies. Primarily, this is because the moment of conception is hidden. Some studies say days or 40 weeks is the best guess for a due date. Other studies say days or 40 weeks and 2 days is better. Due dates are complicated.

Accurate determination of gestational age underpins good obstetric care. The Monash Chart, but none of the existing charts, accurately determined gestational age among an independent IVF twin cohort twin pairs. We conclude that commonly used ultrasound reference charts have inaccuracies. We have generated a CRL reference chart based on true gestational age in an IVF cohort that can accurately determine gestational age at 6—9 weeks of gestation.
Accurate dating of gestational age is central to good obstetric care. It allows the clinicians to better time gestation-specific antenatal screening tests, reduces erroneous labelling of pregnancies as very preterm, preterm, and small-for-gestational-age, and decreases the risk of inappropriate induction of labour [ 1 — 5 ].
In the first trimester, there is a very little biologic variation in fetal size compared with later trimesters. It is therefore a good time in pregnancy to determine gestational age by ultrasound where the crown-rump length CRL is measured and compared to published reference charts.
